The San Fransisco Chronicle is running an interesting story about the runaway success of Brazilian band CSS due to Nick Haley’s use of one of theirs songs in his Apple iPod commercial. The commercial was actually written by Haley just for fun, but was so effective Apple’s marketing people just had to pick it up and use it as a TV spot. It’s interesting that a company like Apple has become so much of a cultural phenomenon they can make a band a hit. More interesting is the fact that the technology has fused so much as a pop-culture icon that anything surrounding it’s marketing becomes popular.
Everyday we see innovative examples of how bands fuse with non-traditional entities to gain a buzz surrounding their music. The ideas and methods, especially using the web, have just begun to be tapped. The future is exciting in this space.
